Year 5 topics

Autumn Term

Nurturing Nature

Let’s grow! A crispy carrot, a luscious lettuce or a tasty tomato. Dig deep and put your back into it, making your own tubs and planters and nurturing your greens.

After all that hard work have your fingers gone green?

Stargazers

Journey through space, the final frontier... Navigate beyond the Sun, the magnificent, blazing star at the centre of our solar system!

Investigate the eight planets - Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Take a look at the Moon, a celestial body that orbits Earth.

Exploring space is probably the greatest adventure that humankind has ever undertaken. Are we alone or are there other life forms out there?

Spring Term

Alchemy Island

It’s time to suspend your disbelief and open your mind. We’re going on a magical journey to Alchemy Island! Adventure through portals and discover the properties of unusual and strange materials.

You’ve got your map, co-ordinates and everything else you need to make your way across Alchemy Island. Don’t forget to pack your imagination!

Got your suitcase ready? Then let the journey begin...

D.A. a. R.T

An exciting 10 week programme to help you become a responsible person who leads a safe and healthy life.
You will learn how to:
  • assess the risks and consequences of your behaviour
  • deal with bullying and peer pressure
  • make safe and responsible choices
  • manage personal stress
  • improve your communication and listening skills and
  • get help from others.

PGL residential

The (as the children call it) 'Parent's Get Lost' residential! This outdoor and adventure activities three day trip is one of the most loved by all pupils (and teachers) at LWJ.

Scaling heights (and flying back down them), problem solving, archery, raft-building and much, much more... the children really get a sense of independence and a great time with their friends.

Summer Term

Off With Her Head!

Travel back in time to the 1500s and meet the terrifying Tudors, a domineering dynasty that changed our history.  Discover an oppulent court where dancing and singing goes hand in hand with swift falls from favour - and even swifter falling of heads!

Flex your muscles and become a criminal investigator.  Will you find out the facts or will the evidence from the past bemuse you?

Scream Machine

Roll up, roll up! You’re going on a day trip to a theme park to soak up the unique sights, smells and sounds of the fair.
Learn about the science behind roller coasters.

Okay, ready to ride? Don’t forget to scream if you want to go faster!

Sensational Samba

Brazil and South America is the focus of this topic! We will creat a carnival atmosphere as we dance through the geography and influence of South American culture.

    Useful information for Year 5

We would love every child to become immersed in books and become avid readers! Regular reading at home and at school will build confidence and hopefully develop a passion for this wonderful lifeskill!

With this in mind, we expect the children to record at least 3 reads in their home school diaries every week and that a parent or carer initials that page weekly. Sharing books with an adult is so valuable and really helps to develop comprehension and higher-order reading skills.

We ask the children to ensure their home school diaries and reading book are brought to school daily so we can communicate with parents/carers easily and promptly.

Homework will follow a fortnightly timetable of maths one week and then English the following week. The children will write their homework in their home school diaries. This will be set on a Tuesday and expected to be completed by the following Monday.

The children will have a weekly list of spellings that will be in their diaries. We will work on those spelling rules at school throughout the week. They will also be on Spelling Shed.

Spelling Shed is a fantastic way to practise those tricky words! Compete online and try and beat your best score! Login details are in home school diaries.

In addition to set homework in maths, we highly recommend battling your friends at TT-Rockstars and improving your times table knowledge. These login details are also in home school diaries.

    Carousel

Carousel now takes place on a Tuesday. The children will learn Spanish, Drama and Music in these sessions with specialist teachers for half a day.

Dance Mat Typing - Learn to type the fun way!
