Mathematics Subject Leaders are Mrs Spencer and Mrs Bell.
At Lowe’s Wong Junior School we believe that ALL children ‘can do’ Maths and we seek to foster an enjoyment of Mathematics. We aim for them to become fluent mathematicians, able to reason and problem solve.
We believe in a Teaching for Mastery approach to Maths. We use the DfE endorsed ‘Maths No Problem’ teaching for mastery scheme, but also select from other high quality resources, such as 'White Rose Maths', and the NCETM PD Materials, to enable us to make the best pedagogical choices for our pupils. Teaching for Mastery is an inclusive approach with an emphasis on representing concepts to promote a deep, conceptual understanding; promoting multiple methods of solving a problem and building self-confidence and resilience in pupils. Topics are studied in depth and those pupils who grasp concepts quickly are challenged with rich and sophisticated problem solving tasks. Those children who are not sufficiently fluent are provided with additional support, normally within their lessons, to consolidate their understanding before moving on.
Children are given strategies to support their learning of addition and subtraction number bonds, as well as multiplication and division facts. Parents are encouraged to support this learning through practice at home. The school subscribes to TTRockstars, which is perfect for learning times tables and related division facts, as well as Mathsframe and MathsWatch, all of which your child can use at home (logins are in their home school diary). Your child’s class teacher and the schools’ Maths leads can offer guidance with this if needed.
